Safety Tools

Hey folks,
I'm going to start a list of safety tools and resources. Please add more (and credit folks) in the replies. Please notify us if any of these links are no longer valid, should be changed, or contain outdated information. Please support the authors and creators of these tools whenever possible.

These resources are about making sure that everyone at your table has a safe, fun, positive experience. For some this might seem like an unnecessary step or a waste of time. Maybe it is. But maybe by taking just a few extra steps, you can be more confident that everyone at your table is aware of what they're getting into and excited for it. Everyone should talk prior to your first game (some call it Session 0) and set parameters. Even if you don't use the tools offered here, it's important that everyone at your table has the same expectations and the same understanding of what is and isn't out of bounds.

I'd like to add a safety feature that I've found useful: simply asking players to share possible triggers with me so I can avoid them in-game. I'm phobic of insects, which I use as an example. The other example I use is people who are trying to quit smoking and don't want descriptions of, let's say, cigar-chomping NPCs.

I did slip up once and had an encounter with spiders - and one of my players hadn't mentioned their arachnophobia. I stopped and apologized, and showed them the token I was planning to use... the more cartoony of the two tokens, actually, and deleted the more realistic one. They said this was OK, and we were good to go.

....and yes, I'm scared of nearly everything with 6 legs (ants are the exception, and I do like luna moths - but every other moth and butterfly is creepy as all heck and nope nope nuh-uh no), but spiders are fine. I actually think they're pretty. Phobias are weird, y'all.
