Cultural consultation for projects involving Native Americans is about more than simple accuracy or a rubber stamp. Our goal is to bring sensitivity and authority to your project as a starting point. From there, we want to elevate your work and help incorporate Indigenous elements that make your project shine brighter for everyone. We want more than just “non-offensive” portrayals of Native Americans in media. We want authentic, joyful, and comprehensive representation within the media itself, as well as the team behind the media. It doesn’t matter whether your project is a game, book, comic, or film. We’ll improve it.
Our first suggestion is always to bring us on board at the start of the project, or as soon as you know you want Indigenous elements. We’ll start you off with a free initial call, just to determine your needs and to see how we can best work together. Beyond that, we offer two ways that we can assist you in your endeavors. First, is direct help. You would contract directly with us and you will partner with someone from our team who has an appropriate background. They’ll be your go to person for whatever services we’ve arranged for.
Alternatively, if we don’t have someone within our circle who has the right background, we can both scout and vet someone to help meet your needs. This service is fee based rather than an hourly rate and we’ll find and screen a person and then introduce you to them. It will then be up to you to arrange a partnership with that person.
- Tabletop and Roleplaying Game Design: We can help infuse your game with Indigenous mechanics, theme, and more. Our team has years of experience working on tabletop games of all types.
- Tabletop and Roleplaying Game Writing: We can provide you with rich lore, fantastic characters, and detailed stories. Coyote & Crow Games has won numerous awards and many of our consultants have worked directly on those titles.
- Art Consultation: We can ensure your art is more than just inoffensive. We’ll help your artists make sure that important and acceptable details are included (or omitted!), ensuring that your art is both compelling and has maximum fidelity.
- Game Rules and Lore Sensitivity Reading: Ideally, you’re working with us before you’ve started writing. But if you’re already finished with your writing, we may be able to work with you and your editor to make sure that your project at least isn’t going to be offensive.
- Manuscript, Script, or Comic Consultation: More than just editing or checking to make sure the proper words were used, we can help ensure that your Native characters are full of the kinds of grounded, truthful details that will take them beyond stereotypes and cliches and turn them into real human beings.
